Requirements For Girls’ Senior School Uniforms In Australia

Posted by: | Posted on: December 8, 2020

Almost all catholic and private schools in all Australian states have an obligatory uniform policy. Majority of government high schools also have obligatory policies; however, they are occasionally less enforced in primary schools. Compared to public schools, school uniform policies tend to be more firmly enforced in catholic and private schools.

The similarity between these learning institutions is the fact that girls and boys would have different sets of clothes. There would also be differences between attire for senior and junior boys and girls.

Girls Senior School Uniforms

Private school clothes would normally feature a necktie as part of the girls’ clothes. This uniform may also include striped or checkered dresses for the summer season. A good example of this is the ‘Gordon’ tartan skirts worn by senior girls at Killara High School. During the winter, girls in most secondary schools usually wear skirts and button-ups with blazers plus ties.

A sports uniform is also necessary for physical education. It typically includes a sports top and shorts for summer. During winter, the female students would normally be in tracksuit tops and bottoms. Most private schools are quite particular about this. The complete attire would also feature specific socks and shoes.

Not so many government learning institutions have a specific sports uniform. In most high schools, this consists of a polo shirt and short, as well as a spray jacket to be worn during winter and wet weather. Sometimes, the female students are required to wear netball skirts. It’s common for students who are in their final year of secondary school to have a jumper/ hoodie to signify their final-year status.

Obviously, you might have concerns about hair length, make-up, color and styling, nose rings, or accessories and jewelry. Well, it will be up to the administrators of the learning institution to make rational rules regarding such accessories. Generally, students would be banned from wearing anything that might pose danger to themselves, other students or even the staff.

Where Does The School Uniform Policy Come From?

One important thing to note is that schools can choose to enforce a requirement for school uniforms if they wish – it’s not a rule, but a choice. However, once the uniform policy is made, it automatically becomes a rule for all registered students who must abide by it. The school council and principal, having the mandate to manage and control the school, will create rules with regards to the standards of dressing and grooming for all students.

Despite the fact that school administrators have the choice of introducing a uniform policy, they cannot arbitrarily set the guidelines without involvement of the community within a learning institution. This is based on regulatory policies, such as the school uniform guidelines of the New South Wales Government that requires student involvement during the design process.

When setting a dress code, administrators should consider the social, cultural and personal background of individual students. They should also consult parents and students to get their views when deciding on the appropriate dress code. Majority of secondary schools have a council to which all students can give suggestions and comments about the prevailing dress code.
